  • Limited chain-up areas due to narrow shoulders

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Angeles Crest Highway open in winter?

The lower section of SR-2 from La Canada to Islip Saddle is usually accessible, but the upper section to Wrightwood can close during and after winter storms. Most Mountain High visitors access the resort via SR-138 from the Cajon Pass rather than the full Angeles Crest route. Check current conditions before departure.

How do most people get to Mountain High?

The most common route to Mountain High is via I-15 through the Cajon Pass to SR-138, then to Wrightwood. This avoids the winding Angeles Crest Highway entirely. SR-2 is scenic but slower and more challenging, especially in winter.

Winter Driving Guide for Angeles Crest Highway

One of the most dramatic mountain roads in California, Angeles Crest requires skill and preparation in winter.

The Angeles Crest Experience

SR-2 rises from the edge of Los Angeles into genuine alpine terrain within 30 miles. The road features tight switchbacks, narrow lanes, and sheer drop-offs. In winter, it transforms into a serious mountain pass that should only be attempted by confident mountain drivers.

Alternative Route via Cajon Pass

Most skiers heading to Mountain High take I-15 north through the Cajon Pass to SR-138. This route is a freeway for most of its length and far easier in winter conditions. Unless you specifically want the Angeles Crest experience, use the Cajon Pass route.

Chain Requirements
  • R1: Chains required except for vehicles with snow tires or AWD/4WD.
  • R2: Chains required except AWD/4WD with snow tires on all four wheels.
  • R3: Chains required on ALL vehicles -- no exceptions.
Safety Tips
  • Daylight Only: Do not drive Angeles Crest in snow or ice after dark. The road is dangerous enough in daylight.
  • Use Cajon Pass Instead: For Mountain High, the I-15/SR-138 route is faster, safer, and rarely has chain controls.
  • Check Closure Status: The upper section of SR-2 closes frequently in winter. Caltrans often closes it preemptively for storms.
